PROGRAM
Day 1
We depart from the Riviera Maya towards the north of the peninsula, a scenic drive that will lead us to the famous pink salt flats of Las Coloradas. A delicious seafood meal awaits us in the fishing village of Rio Lagartos, where we will embark on a private boat tour of the lagoon to discover this stunning bird sanctuary. Flamingos, spoonbills, herons, ospreys, kingfishers, crocodiles and many other species await discovery as we enjoy the sunset before spending the night in a hotel facing the Ria.
Day 2
We explore the mangroves of San Felipe before visiting the stunning archaeological site of Ek Balam, known for its superbly preserved stucco fresco. We’ll take the opportunity to refresh ourselves in a beautiful cenote before arriving in Valladolid, a charming and colorful colonial city where we’ll spend the night in the historic center. While there, options like visiting the convent or the chocolate museum will enhance this beautiful day.
Day 3
Early in the morning, we’ll indulge in the flavors and aromas of Valladolid’s market. Then, we’ll hit the road for one of the modern wonders of the world: Chichen Itza. Your specialized guide will enlighten you about the marvels of this grandiose site and the Mayan civilization, starting from the opening hours, before the massive arrival of visitors. We’ll then head to a beautiful cenote for a refreshing swim before reaching Izamal: “the yellow city.” Another colonial town where we’ll spend the night. The ochre-yellow convent that dominates the city has given its color to the historic center.
Day 4
We’ll visit one of the last sisal haciendas, which contributed to the wealth of the Yucatan in the 19th century with their production of natural fiber. In the afternoon, we’ll explore the city of Merida, the Yucatecan capital, famous for its gastronomy, museums, historic center, and shows. We’ll spend the night in a hotel in the city center.
Day 5
We’ll visit Uxmal, a magnificent Mayan city from the classical period, in the Puuc style, showcasing superbly preserved sculptures and engravings. We’ll also discover the village where traditional Jipijapa hats (Panama hats) are made in caves beneath the houses. We’ll then arrive in another colonial city, the only fortified one: Campeche, the capital of the state of the same name. We’ll spend the night in the historic center.
Day 6
Today, we have a longer stretch of road ahead to reach the southern part of the peninsula and the Calakmul reserve, where we’ll spend the night at the entrance. Along the way, we’ll make a stop at a large open cenote to break up the journey and enjoy a superb and refreshing spot. Then, we’ll visit a new Mayan archaeological site before reaching the village near the reserve, where we’ll spend the night in comfortable cabins.
Day 7
We’ll rise at dawn to be among the first to enter the reserve as it opens. The 60 kilometers / 37 miles that take us from the entrance to the archaeological site offer us the opportunity to see animals crossing the road. We’ll take advantage of some hiking trails perfect for wildlife observation. Then, we’ll visit the immense Mayan site of Calakmul, a superb city in the middle of the jungle, a blend of nature and history. We’ll leave the reserve in the afternoon to head towards Bacalar and its lagoon of seven colors. This is where we’ll spend the night.
Day 8
Here, we’ll take a long boat tour on the lagoon in a private boat. We prioritize sailboats for ecological reasons and to enjoy a peaceful moment. We’ll see this superb lagoon with its different shades of blue. Then, we’ll explore another lagoon by canoe, this time surrounded by jungle. Finally, we’ll arrive in Tulum, a famous tourist destination, where we’ll spend the night.
Day 9
We’ll visit a conservation project run by one of the community’s families, protecting Mayan Melipona bees, Virginia deer, ocellated turkeys, and other species. Then, we’ll have a typical meal with a Maya family living away from other villages. To end the day, we’ll explore the spider monkey reserve, participate in a Maya ceremony, go canoeing on the lake, and for the more adventurous, enjoy zip-lining.
Day 10
