PROGRAM
Day 1
We depart from the Riviera Maya early in the morning to start this tour with one of the modern wonders of the world: Chichen Itza. Your specialized guide will explain everything about this grandiose site. If you’ve already visited this site, we can replace it with another visit that also allows us to take a break on the road for more comfort. Then, we’ll head to the colonial city of Campeche, where we’ll spend the night in the historic center.
Day 2
The last stretch of road before discovering Chiapas and its wonders will take us along the west coast of the peninsula with its beaches facing the Gulf of Mexico. Along the way, we’ll swim in an impressively-sized cenote and finally arrive in Palenque to rest in a beautiful hotel with a pool for our first night in Chiapas.
Day 3
We will journey towards San Cristobal de Las Casas, taking the mountain road with its viewpoints, forests, and numerous villages. We’ll discover our first waterfall, Misol Ha, before enjoying the stunning Agua Azul waterfalls. Please note that during the rainy season, the waterfalls may not appear blue. Finally, we’ll arrive in a city that everyone will love: San Cristobal de Las Casas. The different ethnicities inhabiting the region, the museums, churches, and the numerous activities in the surrounding area are all reasons for us to unpack our bags for 3 nights and fully enjoy this region rich in history and attractions.
Day 4
A day with very little driving to fully enjoy the nearby Tzotzil villages, the flower market, an extraordinary church, and in the afternoon, the center of San Cristobal and its museums. We’ll also take advantage of the cool to cold climate that this city, perched at over 2000 meters /6000 feet altitude, offers. Our second night will be spent in the historic center of this charming city.
Day 5
We will head west towards the state capital to discover the immense Sumidero Canyon. A boat tour amidst its towering cliffs will likely allow us to see crocodiles and birds. Then, we’ll take the road that passes through the reserve to view the canyon from above, from various viewpoints and lookout points. We’ll return to San Cristobal for one last night.
Day 6
We’ll hit the road eastward, first to discover the Cascadas del Chiflón, a splendid spot for swimming and hiking. Then, the road running along Guatemala will take us to see the stunning Montebello Lakes, each with a different shade of blue and surrounded by immense forests, including conifers. We’ll spend the night in cabins overlooking one of the lakes, amidst the mountains, in absolute tranquility.
Day 7
We will explore several of these lakes, either by canoe or on a raft. We may even cross the Guatemala border, on the other side of one of the lakes, just for a brief excursion. Then, we’ll head to a place as beautiful as it is tranquil for a night by a river and its numerous waterfalls.
Day 8
In the morning, we’ll embark on a short hike offering stunning views of the river and the forest, truly a paradise on Earth! We’ll then follow along the border and gradually descend to return to a more tropical climate. Along the way, we’ll visit the conservation and reintroduction project for scarlet macaws before arriving in Frontera Corozal, where we’ll spend the night.
Day 9
Our hotel near the pier will allow us to take the first boat early in the morning to the archaeological site of Yaxchilan. We will have the chance to be among the first to visit and enjoy this site lost in the middle of the jungle. Accessible only by boat, we will have plenty of opportunities to observe many species of birds and most likely monkeys. Then, we’ll visit the site of Bonampak and its frescoes, which remain the best-preserved in the entire Maya area. Finally, we’ll arrive in a small village of Lacandon Maya where we’ll spend the night, close to the river.
Day 10
In the morning, depending on the season, we will go rafting in the midst of the Lacandon jungle, which is part of the Montes Azules Reserve. Then, we’ll go for a swim in stunning waterfalls before arriving in Palenque, where we spent our first night in Chiapas.
Day 11
We will visit the famous archaeological site of Palenque as soon as it opens, with its impressive temples and preserved jungle. It’s a major site that we’ll explore with a specialized guide. Then, we’ll take the road back to the Yucatan Peninsula for a night at the doorstep of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve.
Day 12
Sleeping near the entrance of the reserve will give us the advantage of being the first ones there as soon as it opens, increasing our chances of spotting local wildlife. In this stunning biosphere reserve, monkeys, toucans, ocellated turkeys, coatis, agoutis, foxes, deer, and even the rare jaguars may cross our path early in the morning. A few short hikes along jungle paths may allow us to observe some additional species before reaching the majestic archaeological site of Calakmul, located right in the middle of this immense tropical forest. We’ll have a comprehensive exploration of this reserve and the archaeological site of the same name, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites as a mixed cultural and natural heritage. Then, we’ll hit the road towards the city of Bacalar and its lagoon of seven colors, where we’ll spend the night.
Day 13
Our exploration circuit will continue in Bacalar with a long tour on several lagoons and river arms in a canoe. We’ll first visit the famous lagoon of seven colors, then explore different “waterways” away from the tourist circuits before venturing into a part of the jungle accessible only by paddle. We’ll recharge with a seafood meal before returning to the Riviera Maya.
