MAYAN VILLAGE AND CUISINE EXPERIENCE
Enjoy a different experience in the countryside: an immersion into nowadays Maya villages to better understand their daily life and their local cuisine.
For this journey, we will take you to a Maya village – not the tourist one, but a real one, an authentic village, without frills, yet with the always beautiful and honest welcome of its inhabitants.
A unique experience
We will start our day with a traditional breakfast to fuel up for the rest of the day. Then, we will follow one of our hosts to his “huerto,” a vegetable garden, where he will explain his farming methods and the varieties grown. We will select seasonal fruits, plants and vegetables to prepare our meal. Depending on the season, those interested can even gather honey directly from the hives, equipped with proper protection.
Next, we will head to the kitchen, where we will all prepare a traditional Yucatecan meal together: appetizers, main course, and dessert for everyone, based on the season and available ingredients. The main course will be cooked in the “Pib,” an earth oven (you’ll have to get your hands dirty), where preheated limestone rocks will provide the heat to cook our meal. Everything will be covered with banana leaves, branches, and then soil.
While the meal is cooking, we will visit some villagers to learn more about the art of weaving hammocks and traditional embroidery. Everyone will have the opportunity to try their hand at it. Finally, we will enjoy our delicious meal and taste various specialties of the region.
