PROGRAM
Day 1
We will begin our journey with a visit to the archaeological site of Tulum, located on the Caribbean coast: the most photogenic of the Maya sites! Then, we will continue our journey to the Coba site, which we will explore by bicycle or “ maya limo” in the jungle, a major site from the classical period. We will taste several typical Yucatecan dishes before a refreshing bath in a cenote. Finally, we will arrive in the colonial city of Valladolid, where we will spend the night in a charming hotel in the historic center.
Day 2
Bright and early, the Valladolid market will delight us with its flavors and aromas. Then, we will hit the road for one of the modern wonders of the world: Chichen Itza. Your specialized guide will explain everything about the wonders of this magnificent site and the Maya civilization, right from the opening, before the massive arrival of visitors. We will then continue our journey to the west of the peninsula to visit a sisal fiber hacienda, those that brought wealth and fame to the state of Yucatan in the 19th century. Finally, we will arrive in the Yucatecan capital: Merida, a city of history, museums and gastronomy, where we will spend the night in a charming hotel in the historic center.
Day 3
Another splendid site awaits us today, the grand Uxmal. A site from the Classic period but of Puuc architectural style this time, very different from the Peten styles of Coba or the eastern coast of Tulum, for instance. After visiting this magnificent city, we will have a typical meal at a Maya family’s house before enjoying the cenotes in the area and another Maya site: Mayapan. This Maya-Toltec style site resembles a mini Chichen Itza, minus the crowds. We will spend the night in another colonial town: the yellow city of Izamal. Indeed, the ochre yellow tone of its convent has given the color to its entire historic center.
Day 4
We will explore the northern part of the peninsula, the place from where the ancient Maya exported salt, so precious in their commercial exchanges. We will visit the mangrove of San Felipe, see the pink salt flats of Las Coloradas, and take a private boat tour in the Ria Lagartos bird reserve at sunset. We will spend the night in a hotel facing the lagoon in this charming fishing village.
Day 5
A last Classic period Maya site awaits us: Ek Balam and its beautifully crafted and perfectly preserved stucco facade. We will then refresh ourselves in a beautiful cenote with clear water and enjoy a traditional meal at a Maya family’s house before returning to the Riviera Maya.
