We’ll head south from the Riviera Maya, making our first stop at the archaeological site of Muyil to begin learning more about THE Mayan civilization, while searching for howler monkeys and birds in the forest. We’ll then head for Bacalar, a small town on the shores of the “Lagoon of Seven Colors”, where we’ll spend the night. We’ll sail the lagoon in a private boat: we prefer sailboats for ecological reasons and to enjoy this moment of calm. We’ll be able to admire the sunset over this superb lagoon.
After breakfast, we’ll enjoy a swim in a different setting from the previous day. We’ll then visit a Mayan archaeological site with its exuberant vegetation, where we may be lucky enough to come across a few spider monkeys. We’ll do a cooking workshop to prepare our meal, guided by the women of a Mayan cooperative. In the late afternoon, we’ll visit a place unique in the world: a cave from where hundreds of thousands of bats fly out every evening at sunset. This is also the time chosen by the snakes living in the cave to hunt the bats. We leave the cave at dusk and spend the night in rustic cabañas in the nearby Mayan village.
After a breakfast prepared by our Mayan hosts, we set off for another jungle-fringed lagoon, where we can canoe, swim and observe several species of birds. After lunch by the lagoon, we’ll head back to a cenote for a well-deserved bath.
