A long stretch of road awaits us to spend the night near the entrance of the Calakmul Reserve, part of the “second green lung of America.” Two stops at archaeological sites hidden in lush jungle will punctuate our itinerary. In the late afternoon, near the reserve, we can witness the flight of nearly 2 million bats heading out to hunt. We will spend the night in comfortable “cabañas.”
The advantage of sleeping at the gates of the reserve is being among the first, as soon as it opens, and thus increasing our chances of observing the local fauna. In this superb biosphere reserve, monkeys, toucans, ocellated turkeys, coatis, agoutis, foxes, deer, and even the rare jaguars may cross our path early in the morning. Some short hikes may allow us to observe additional species before reaching the immense archaeological site of Calakmul, located in the heart of this vast tropical forest. It’s a day rich in discoveries in the reserve and on the archaeological site of the same name, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a mixed cultural and natural heritage. We will then head towards the city of Bacalar and its lagoon of seven colors where we will spend the night.
Our exploration continues with a long canoe tour on the famous lagoon, followed by different “waterways” away from tourist circuits, before exploring a part of the jungle accessible only by paddle. We will replenish our energy with a seafood meal before returning to the Riviera Maya.
