Sometimes it’s hard to choose between all the possible destinations. So why choose Mexico? From Baja California to the Riviera Maya, there are many good reasons to fly to Mexico:
- Low cost of living
One reason, and not the least, is the budget, as this is an issue that is often at the heart of our concerns. Contrary to popular belief, Mexico offers the opportunity to travel far on a small budget. It is possible to travel 8,000 kilometres without breaking the bank, as the cost of living is relatively low. Also, be aware that the touristic places can be much more expensive than others regions of Mexico.
The biggest expense will undoubtedly be the plane ticket. As far as accommodation is concerned, you will easily find cheap accommodation or hostels as in all countries. You can also choose to stay with a local by renting a room, which will allow you to live closer to the locals. As for food, it is often cheaper to eat in street stalls or in some restaurants than at home. It’s amazing how well you can eat for only a few euros!
So you can enjoy your holiday without depriving yourself of anything !
- Its culture and traditions
Lovers of history and culture will love Mexico as many civilisations have passed through the country. Whether it be the Toltecs, the Aztecs, the Olmecs or the Mayans, all of these peoples have left an indelible mark, which is still present in its many vestiges but also in popular culture.
Mexico is also a very festive country. There are many religious and popular festivities that take place every month, including the very important festival of the dead, “el dia de los muertos”, which you can’t miss ! It is a very colourful festival as the markets all over the country are filled with papier-mâché skeletons, cempasuchil flowers, sweets and copal. The Mexicans keep vigil in the cemeteries in memory of those who have left with altars, offerings and night marches.
The anniversary of the apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe on 12 December is also widely celebrated throughout the country. Pilgrimages and acts of devotion take place everywhere. Every year, thousands of pilgrims flock from all over Mexico to the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City to thank the Virgin for the favours granted.
Here, the change of scenery is total : you change continent but also way of life!
- Exceptional landscapes and biodiversity
Mexico offers a diversity of landscapes that will satisfy everyone. We could make a list of all the incredible things to see during your stay, such as bathing in a cenote, visiting Mayan remains, passing through a cactus desert, trekking through the lush jungle or strolling through the country’s colonial towns… But beware, this list is not exhaustive, as Mexico is full of all kinds of wonders.
It is also one of the countries with the most ecosystems, plants and animals in the world. For your information, more than 10% of the world’s flora and fauna can be found here, which gives you a much better chance of seeing pink flamingos, pelicans, manatees and, why not, the very discreet jaguar during your expeditions into the jungle !
- Its tasty gastronomy
Very good and varied, Mexican food is full of flavours and this is one of the reasons why it is famous all over the world! Mexican gastronomy is actually an Intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
Contrary to popular belief, not all dishes here are spicy. Often the hot sauce is put on the side, and if not, you can always order your dish without chilli.
The basic foodstuffs that make up the sauce are corn, avocado, tomato and beans. You can try one of the tasty typical dishes such as tostadas, cochinita pibil, panuchos, mole, relleno negro, or a delicious guacamole… The most delicate palates will be delighted !
- The characteristic hospitality of its inhabitants
Mexicans are warm and welcoming people. And even if you get lost, they will show you the way with a smile ! Its inhabitants will quickly transmit their good mood and their good vibes to you. It is not uncommon to hear someone humming in the street or on the bus.
A tip : before you leave, learn a few words in Spanish. You’ll see their faces light up with a big smile when they hear you !
- A favourable climate all year round
There are three main areas in Mexico : the South and the coastal fringes, which are hot and humid; the semi-arid North, which is hot and dry; and the volcanic Centre, which is mild or cool depending on altitude.
Here, the passage of the seasons is not as marked as in other regions of the world, since 93% of the national territory experiences temperatures that oscillate between 10 and 26°C. In fact, as in many tropical countries, a distinction is made between the dry season, from November to May, and the rainy season, from June to October. During the rainy season, it rains almost everywhere in the country, but the showers are usually relatively short and the sun is never far away !
